Watchdog investigating after man dies in the custody of Toronto police

The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is investigating the death of a man in police custody. A 48-year-old man was found unresponsive just before 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning while he was held at Toronto Police Service 43 division , near Lawrence Avenue East and Asterfield Drive in Scarborough, according to the SIU. Paramedics were called and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had been arrested on Wednesday and was expected to attend a bail hearing on Thursday. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says that a post-mortem is scheduled for Friday. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 1-800-787-8529.
