PSNI WhatsApp scam warning as fraudsters pose as 'family members' asking for money
The PSNI has asked the public to be cautious following a number of reports involving a scam circulating on WhatsApp.
The scams involve a text or WhatsApp from a person claiming to be a family member, and have the common aim of encouraging the recipient to transfer money.
The warning comes after 11 reports of the scam were received on Wednesday alone from victims right across the country.
Superintendent Gerard Pollock said: “We received 11 reports yesterday alone (13 October) from individuals in Counties Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Antrim and Derry/Londonderry.
“In each case, a person purporting to be a family member, often a daughter or son, asks for money. Typically, the ‘child’ is short of money or late paying bills, and makes an ask for the recipient to transfer money …
