Parents debate how elementary schools should handle transitions

Superintendent Mark McLaughlin said this week that Conejo Valley Unified will put in place more well-defined procedures for how teachers should handle creating an inclusive classroom environment for transgender students after an incident at Maple Elementary School. But despite fierce criticism from some community members, McLaughlin said he “110%” supported the way staffers handled the situation. State law requires educators to refer to students by their preferred identity and pronouns, as well as provide an inclusive learning environment.
