Weymouth resident awarded book prize

Lisa Braxton, of Weymouth, received the 2021 Independent Publisher Book Awards gold medal for her debut novel, “The Talking Drum” on May 29. “The Talking Drum,” published by Inanna Publications in April 2020, focuses on three couples and how they’re affected when an urban redevelopment project takes over an immigrant neighborhood. The Independent Publisher Book Awards are the longest-running unaffiliated contest open exclusively to independent presses. The IPPY Awards are open to authors and publishers worldwide who produce books written in English and intended for the North American market. For “The Talking Drum,” Braxton has also received an Outstanding Literary Award from the National Association of Black Journalists and the Best Overall Independently Published Book Award from Shelf Unbound book review magazine.
