The NHS is under the most extreme pressure in recent history with record numbers of patients waiting for emergency care and routine treatment and a rising shortage of critical care beds. A total of 4.46 million people were waiting to start hospital treatment in England at the end of November 2020, the highest number since records began, new NHS figures show. It compares to 4.42 million in November 2019 and 4.45 million in October that year — the previous highest number from the data first recorded in August 2007.
